Cultural Features

The Philippines is a culturally diverse country. One of the reasons is that it is “a nation of 7000 islands.” Since ancient times, many immigrants have settled here. Thus, the Philippines is a culture in which East meets West, including Malaysia, Indonesia, Spain, the Netherlands, China, Mexico and the United States, etc. In early times, they had oral literature, including dramas, epics, lyric poems, myths, riddles, proverbs and other styles, such as the ancient narrative poem "Ali Gurong" by the Ifugao people , "Hunting Song in Bangdu Region", "Song of Orphans", and the epic "Darangang" by the Malanao people on Mindanao Island .

Features of Food

Filipino food has been shaped by Spaniards, Americans, and Chinese. For about 70 percent of Filipinos, rice is considered their staple food and corn is the staple food for 30 percent of the population. Many Filipinos prefer cooking tapioca and rice with coconut juice, wrapping rice in a banana leaf or pouring soup onto rice. Non-staple foods are chicken and pork, which are often stewed or fried. They add a large amount of garlic, vinegar or other spices to dishes or soups.

Famous Filipino Cuisines:

“Lechon” is a typical Filipino cuisine, a roasted pig. Paksiw na Isda is a dish, made of fish, vegetables and vinegar. “Kilawin” is made of minced fish or prawns.
