位於東亞島弧中央區域,居東北亞東南亞交會處,為亞太經貿運輸重要樞紐及重要戰略要地,北迴歸線橫跨中南部。地處熱帶亞熱帶氣候區的臺灣,自然景觀與生態系資源相當豐富而多元。

Located in the central area of East Asian island arc and between Northeast and Southeast Asia, Taiwan is not only an essential economic and transport hub for the Asia-Pacific region but also a strategic location. Since the Tropic of Cancer crosses through Taiwan, Taiwan’s climate is tropical and subtropical, which leads to a broad range of environments and incredible biological diversity.

2021年8月底統計目前總人口約23,192,768人,可分為5大族群:漢族閩南人漢族客家人外省人原住民族(含平埔族)、新住民。臺灣文化的原型由原住民文化與中國渡來漢人的閩南文化客家文化傳入的中華文化臺灣融合。

The current population of Taiwan is 23,192,768 as of the end of August, 2021. There are five main ethnic groups: Holo Taiwanese, Hakka Taiwanese, Mainlanders, Taiwanese indigenous peoples (including Taiwanese plains aborigines), and Taiwanese New Immigrants. The prototype of Taiwan culture is a fusion of aboriginal, Holo and Hakka cultures.

十七世紀初以來,臺灣歷經許多政權的統治,荷蘭、西班牙、鄭氏、清帝國與日本先後統治臺灣,直到一九四五年由中華民國國民政府接管。天然的海島地型造就臺灣濃厚的海洋文化的性格,荷蘭人促成臺灣發展轉口貿易,也吸引著更多的移民前來開拓謀生,在這裡安家立業,臺灣也從移民社會轉變成本土社會。近20年由於社會的需要,引入大量新南向國家的外籍移工,新住民也大幅增加,讓已成立本土特色的文化,再次融入更多元的文化特色。

From 17th century, Taiwan has been under the rule of different regimes, including Holland, Spain, the Zheng kingdom, the Qing Empire and Japan. Since 1945, Taiwan has been under the governance of the Republic of China. The island geography forms a unique Taiwan ocean culture. The Dutch contributed to the development of entrepot trade and attracted more immigrants to settle down in Taiwan. Thus, Taiwan has turned from an immigration society into an indigenous society. In the last 20 years, due to a need for labor, the New Southbound Policy has attracted a large number of migrant workers, leading to a growth in immigration, resulting in a rich blending of Taiwan culture.

多元的文化造就了臺菜多元融合的特性,匯聚了中國八大菜系,融合日本料理以及東南亞風味。其中臺灣的小吃文化尤具特色,小吃是平民美食也是記憶與情感連結的媒介。小吃在臺灣隨處可見、乃至在此發揚光大的平民美食,如刈包、蚵仔煎、擔仔麵、滷肉飯、炸雞排、鹹酥雞、烤玉米、烤香腸、蔥油餅、紅豆餅、臭豆腐、肉圓、蚵仔麵線、碗粿、筒仔米糕、豬血糕、滷味、胡椒餅、麻糬、小籠包、還有珍珠奶茶等。

Taiwan’s multiculturalism contributes to the diversity of Taiwanese cuisine, featuring eight major Chinese cuisines as well as a blending of Japanese and Southeast Asian cuisines.
